These beauties are rumoured to be descendants of horses hidden in the vlei during the Anglo Boer war

“While hiking through the Rooisand Nature Reserve, I caught a glimpse of the only wild horses found roaming free in South Africa.  My experience with the wild horses was my first foray into nature photography, an encounter that changed my life forever. I spent four months following them around for thousands of kilometres hoping to get the perfect shot. The outcome was that I started exhibiting and selling my own work for the first time. In the end, I believe that they had a bigger effect on my life than I had on theirs.”

Discoverer tip: The horses seldom venture out into the dunes between vlei and ocean. They prefer the flat marshy area in the centre – probably because they feel safer there.
